The Rock of Gibraltar, one of the Pillars of Hercules in Greek mythology, has a strategic location on the Strait of Gibraltar where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, with Europe to the north and the continent of Africa to the south.
Standing at the top of the Rock of Gibraltar it’s magical to look across the entrance of the Mediterranean Sea towards Morocco in North Africa – only nine miles away!
I hope you´ve enjoyed this spectacular entrance, which is my contribution to this week´s Sunday Post.

What a beautiful photo, Marianne, with that gorgeous blue sea and sky. I can’t believe Morocco is only 9 miles away at this point. 🙂
Maybe you will get chance to visit Morocco this summer when you are nearby 🙂
Maybe so, but I’m not planning on it. I’m a little burned out on the Middle East right now. I think I’d like to come back to explore Morocco in a couple of years, not in summer, and when I’ve been away for awhile. 🙂
What a beautiful sight that is indeed Marianne. Great shot and entry hon. 🙂 *hugs*
I think it’s even more beautiful because of the significance of its geographical position – plus it’s somewhere we all know about, isn’t it?
Thanks for your lovely comment, Sonel – much appreciated.
Absolutely hon and indeed. I would sure love to travel all over to photograph beautiful sights like that. 🙂 You are very welcome. *hugs*
What a beautiful clear day! What good luck you had, with all the rain lately. We haven’t been that way in a while.
Yes, I was very lucky with the weather. Gibraltar isn’t somewhere I visit very often – more usually it’s when we have visitors staying with us. Still, it’s a different kind of day out, taking them to another country!
Wow! What a fantastic entrance. 🙂
Thanks Robin!
I loved this post as all of yours. Is that a house towards the top? Can you imagine? Thanks for adding to my wander lust account : ))
There is another viewing platform a little higher than the one I took this photo from, which you can see the square shape of near the centre of the photo, above where it says eastofmalaga.net.
If you mean at the top right of the Rock – well, no it’s not a house – it’s too small, but maybe it’s something to do with communications – or even just a rock. I don’t think there is access to anywhere higher than the other viewing platform – but of course, I’m no expert.
What a great take on ‘entrance’. Fantastic!
Very kind of you to say so, Gemma.
Is there an entrance more grand? You used the word “magical”. How right you are!
Well, I’m sure there are entrances as grand, but I guess as another commenter has said, it’s the significance of this place that makes it so magical.
And it IS a great view of another continent, too!
Thanks for your comment and for your continuing support of my blog. Much appreciated, John.
what a perfect photo, the air is so clear, and full of significance at this fabled place 🙂
Thanks Christine. Yes, this is a special place full of (especially military) significance.
If we have time, I always try to take our visitors there, because it is such an unusual place.
Spectacular view, Marianne!!
Yes, it is isn’t it? Thanks Amy.
Marianne, that is a class photo. I can never get over the views here in Gib or looking out to Morocco.
Thanks. I love the fact that another continent is so close by – that doesn’t happen in many places in the world.
Stunning, I love the blue glow on the rock 🙂
Thanks Gilly.
A stunning view, wonderful!
Thanks Marion.
Clever you! Loved it – used to enjoy passing it, on the way west and well remember standing there, looking across to Morocco, wondering if I’d ever get there. (Yes, i did. What a trip. From the other side, coming back, we were too busy cleaning and re-cleaning the car, touching up our makeup, trying to coax our hair into demure styles ready for Franco’s welcoming party – those were scary days.).
I’m glad you got to Morocco – I’ve been too, but only on a three day visit to Tangier. I’ve yet to explore the country in depth.
Sounds like you had quite a trip, Meredith!
I should travel more.Meanwhile, I`ll just enjoy your pics.
AAwwww … you should!
Thanks Red Hen.
Very impressive and what a view
Thanks Dallas.
Beautiful photo for Jake’s theme, Marianne.
Thanks Sylvia.
Amazing place and excellent captured… 🙂
I agree – and thanks!
Don’t think I’ve seen it taken from that angle and it’s a superb shot. Fine entrance indeed, Marianne. I hope to tootle down there some time this year. (I’m always hoping 🙂
Thanks Jo – I hope you get chance to visit yourself. It’s worth catching the cable car up to the top and then wandering around for a while. That’s where this shot was taken from.
Great image of the rock, so nice against the sky. 🙂
Thanks – nice of you to say so. Much appreciated.
Good picture of the rock – I like the contrast between the vegetation and the rock! I have never been to Gibraltar and don’t suppose I ever will!
Why not? Sleazy Jet or Ryan fly here.
Well, I’m not being rude but I am not attracted to visit a place that likes to be thought of as ‘a bit of GB’ If I want to see a red post box or an old red telephone kiosk then I can walk down the street into Grimsby. I have to confess however that North East Lincolnshire is a lot cooler than Gibraltar so that may be able to persuade me. But then again there are the monkeys – I’m not a big fan of monkeys – unless its their Greatest Hits album!
In which case you lack a little knowledge. Or have been reading too much Daily Wail. But hey, what do I know about Gibraltar? You certainly know less.
Ouch! Point Taken.
Thanks Andrew. I’m surprised to hear that – you seem to have been everywhere!
Awesome shot and the sky is so blue.
Thanks – it is a special place,so I’m glad it was a beautiful day when I took the shot.
Perfect weather! Looks beautiful.
I had hoped to go there when I was in Spain years ago, but it was too far off the path in the short time we had there. Thanks for sharing.
Maybe next time then?
You’re welcome!
Yes… always leave something undone for a chance to go back. Next time for sure 🙂 I would love to do a back packing tour of Europe again.
I had an error on my comments… but yes next time for sure!
