Appreciation is a wonderful thing; it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well – Voltaire
Sometimes, blogging can be tough – especially when you first start out. But, as with so many things, you largely get back what you put in. We are all trying to make our own way in this life, but it´s all the sweeter to pause along that journey, from time to time, not only to appreciate the efforts of other people, but also to accept and be gracious in receiving recognition from others.
It´s their encouragement that keeps each one of us giving our best and striving to do even more.

I can´t always find the time to comply with the rules that accompany each of the nominations for Awards, but I hope that in the spirit of encouraging my fellow bloggers, you will accept this as my thanks for the many generous awards and comments you have shared with me.
I am truly grateful.
So, in the time-honoured tradition, here are some random facts about me:
Some things I love: roller-coasters (the faster the better), pub quizzes, cars, floating in a swimming pool after dark watching the stars, cooking with fresh ingredients, fountain pens, motorbikes, cilantro, walking barefoot on the beach, fairy lights, classic rock music, fresh flowers, Random Acts of Kindness, handwritten letters, driving fast, baby animals, Greek yoghurt and freshly-laundered sheets on my bed.
And other things I dislike: arrogance, tomatoes, bad weather, spiders, cheap shoes, racism, gin, having cold hands, climbing ladders, bullies, clowns and blue cheese.
Some FABULOUS moments in my life:
I´ve done many amazing things but a few that stand out are:
Swimming with dolphins on the island of Curacao in the Caribbean
Sailing along the length of Doubtful Sound in New Zealand
Cuddling a tiger in Thailand
Teaching English as a volunteer in Cambodia
Snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia
Riding on the Star ferry across Hong Kong harbour
Watching a geyser erupt in Iceland.
Marvelling at the sheer grandeur of the Grand Canyon
Riding elephants in Thailand
Drinking a Singapore Sling in the Raffles Hotel, Singapore
Gazing at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel inside the Vatican in Rome.
My mantras:
BLONDE – It´s a hair colour NOT a personality trait!
Every woman dies, but not every woman truly lives.
As far as nominating other bloggers for Awards, I am more than happy to provide links to other blogs not only on this page, but also on an on-going basis, through the CBBH PHOTO CHALLENGE each month.
I introduced the CBBH Challenge as a good way of introducing new blogs to each other, (a kind of “Blog Cocktail Party”, if you like), with the chance to comment and follow, but without the necessity of having to rack your brains each week to think of “25 things to do with a Custard Creme”; “what piece of advice I would retrospectively give to my teenage self”; “which celebrity I have a crush on” or “why I think I´m on this Earth”. (No disrespect intended to any awards/tags that demand answers to such questions)!

Hello Marianne
We are celebrating my retirement with a 4 month sabbatical in Axarquia in 2017, and your blog is so helpful and a real gem of useful and informative articles. No long term plans to retire in the area but I am working on this, we have spent time in Catalunya including the winter period, and found it cold. Hence our move south.
Areas of interest are Velez Malaga & North. Next summer we have a villa in Puenta Don Manuel and intend to tour and make some plans for the 4 month trip in 2017. Your blog is feeding us with lots of ideas. Retire April 2017 and will drive down for a lease starting 1st May. Stay up until the end of August and drive back to the UK.
An article on long and short term rentals would be an interesting read, our 2017 window is May till August , so I would be interested to read what local agents would suggest on rental properties for a short lease over the peak summer period.
I follow on facebook & twitter, cannot get enough…..
Thank you
Ivan
Great blogg. Thinking of moving permanently to Malaga but somewhat nervous after separation from my wife. It worries me that zI could end up lonely. Any expat clubs, societies in that area Marianne? Thanks for all that brilliant info. Stan age 55.
Hello Stan age 55 😉 I would say “Go for it!” – when you already have a change in your life – why not make it an even bigger one? 🙂 There are LOADS of expats around these parts and lots of things to do. If you are on Facebook, Stan, follow my page East of Malaga there – and message me on FB (and remind me about this conversation) and I’ll point you in the direction of a couple of groups you will LOVE.
Thanks Marianne I will do.
Stan.
Thank you for sharing your life and experiences! This is very useful, personal and generous info!
Congratulations! Keep them coming!
Thanks Dana – much appreciated 🙂
I do hope that you will accept the brand new Blog of the Year 2012 Award which I have bestowed upon your blog – you can read my award ceremony post here ‘Blog of the Year 2012 Award’ http://algarveblog.net/2012/10/24/blog-of-the-year-2012-award-its-award-time/ Thank you for entertaining and informing me this year – and Congratulations!
You know, it´s amazing how things work out. This award couldn´t have come on a better day for me – it was just the pick-me-up I needed. I´m honoured, thank you so much Alyson 🙂
you’re so welcome! hope you enjoy!
oh, I love this page!! you don’t mind if I do a similar page do you? I received an award that I haven’t had time to complete and I’ve been feeling bad. this could be the answer for it should be recognized. thank you! and congrats on all your many recognitions/awards, you certainly deserve them!! (and I still need to work on my other page you recommended….can’t seem to find the time right now!)
Of course I don´t mind, Toby. Once I had made the effort to display various facts about me (which many Awards demand in their rules) it´s just a matter of adding them along the way.
Easy peasy! 🙂
May I say beautifully done!
I wanted to have a way to say thank you, but not detract from the subject matter of my blog by having to keep breaking off from it. This seemed like the perfect way 🙂
